Anonymity

Anonymity on the web is what turned me off to trying to engage in meaningful dialogue. The Santa Fe New Mexican web site forums are suppose to be used by people using their "full real names." But the place is inhabited by cowardly jerks using fake names to trash, bait, flame, slander, deflect and "fnord" (disinformation or irrelevant information intending to misdirect, with the implication of a conspiracy). "Fnord" is a word coined by Anton Wilson, the father of Luna Wilson who I have written about in this blog.

If there is no way to enforce rules there shouldn't be any. Rule 5. You must use your real full name when posting. Without the delete button The New Mexican is completely responsible for any slander that occurs here with the intended malice of allowing certain selected fake named posters to be protected. Of course this site has descended to the lowest common denominator ... declining in value proportionally with anonymity. We were also suppose to be able to interact with the staff and reporters. When was the last time anyone has seen that occur? Think about all the people that have left this forum and the quality of the discourse now compared to the past.

Every time I go to the New Mexican's "Newspaper Ethics section there are no articles. No Stories ... no ethics, I guess.

What are you bitching about, Cove? You played a few games yourself on there. Want people to think you are a hypocrite?

Nice guys finish last on the SFNM.

If you think I would ever use my real name on a public forum with a bunch of liberal cooks on it, you are crazy. Are you mad that you cannot track down the real person behind the pen name "Troy Sammons?" I love it.

you've spent all of this time and Santa Fe and you are still a transplant loser who can't make it in a town of losers. You are a cautionary tale.

Sorry Cove, I have to agree with the others in saying that you yourself were (are) a prime abuser of the SFNM "rules". You wouldn't actually suggest that you have never engaged in baiting, flaming, slandering, etc. any of your fellow posters, would you? As a sometime referee of amateur sports, I was once told by a more experienced ref that "A rule isn't a rule if you don't enforce it." Good advice. When people routinely post on the SFNM while outwardly admitting that they are using an alias, (and in some cases, multiple aliases) well, I no longer felt obligated to play by the rules either. Why should it be a rule for me, and not for some other guy? By the way, this shouldn't be construed as a criticism for the fact that that you DON'T play by the SFNM's "rules". I don't either, although they only print about 2/3 of everything I post, and even then, it goes up hours after the fact. Makes it pretty much impossible to have a running conversation with anyone. Maybe if I started posting screechy diatribes, couldn't construct a coherent sentence, and misspelled "C-A-T", I would be accorded the "preferred poster" status that people like Babe and Roy Streit currently enjoy. Oh well, screw 'em all...
